Marietta was founded in 1834 and was named after Mary Cobb, the wife of Senator Thomas Willis Cobb. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes like the Creek and Cherokee. In 1838, the US Army built Marietta to help protect white settlers during the Cherokee removal period. The was located near the Chattahoochee River and the town of Marietta grew up around the fort.

During the Civil War, Marietta was captured by Union forces in 1864 and the town of Marietta was badly damaged. After the war, Marietta slowly rebuilt and became a stopping point on the Western & Atlantic Railroad line between Chattanooga and Atlanta.
