Kennesaw is a city in Cobb County, Georgia, located about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta. According to the Wikipedia page for Kennesaw, the city had a population of 33,038 as of the 2020 census, making it the third-largest city in Cobb County.

History

Kennesaw was founded in 1887 near the area where the Western & Atlantic Railroad crossed the Kennesaw Mountain fork of Paces Creek. The town was named for the mountain. During the Civil War, Kennesaw Mountain was the site of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, fought on June 27, 1864.

Kennesaw was incorporated as a city in 1961. The opening of Town Center Mall in 1986 initiated a real estate boom that lasted through 2005, increasing the city's population from just over 1,000 residents in 1970 to over 30,000 today.

Government

Kennesaw has a council-manager form of government. The city council consists of a mayor and six council members, elected at-large. The day-to-day operations are handled by a city manager appointed by the city council.

The Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball team relocated their Single-A affiliate, the Rome Braves, to Kennesaw in 2003. The team was renamed the Gwinnett Braves in 2009 after relocating to Lawrenceville.
