History

Johns Creek traces its history back to the early 19th century when the Cherokee people inhabited the land. After being forced out on the Trail of Tears in the 1830s, white settlers began moving into the area establishing large farmsteads and cotton plantations. Some of the important early settlers were the McGinnis, Findley, Wilson, Cowart, Medlock and Sloan families. The Medlock Bridge crossing the Chattahoochee River linking Johns Creek and Duluth was an important development. Johns Creek gets its name from a tributary creek off the Chattahoochee River named after John Rogers, an early settler in the area.

Development accelerated in Johns Creek following construction of Georgia State Route 141 and Interstate 285 in the 1980s. Beginning in the 1990s, large residential master planned communities such as Country Club of the South, Rivermont Golf & Country Club and St. Ives Country Club transformed Johns Creek into an affluent commuter suburb. The city was officially incorporated on December 1, 2006.
