Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812.

Some key moments in Gainesville's history include being almost entirely destroyed during the Civil War, the development of a strong poultry industry and its rise as a regional transportation hub in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the devastating 1936 tornado that killed over 200 people but led to rebuilding and modernization of the city.
