Dalton is a city located in northwest Georgia in Whitfield County. As of the 2020 census, Dalton had a population of 34,069 residents, making it the second largest city in northwest Georgia after Rome. Dalton has served as the county seat of Whitfield County since 1851.

Population and Demographics

According to the Wikipedia page for Dalton, the city has grown significantly in population over the past few decades. In 1970, Dalton had just 15,615 residents. By 2000, the population had jumped to 27,912 residents. The latest census in 2020 counted 34,069 residents in Dalton.

Dalton has also become increasingly diverse. In 2000, over 60% of residents identified as non-Hispanic white. By 2010, that number dropped to 54% as Hispanic and Latino residents moved into the area. Currently, roughly 48% of Dalton's population is non-Hispanic white, 47% is Hispanic/Latino, 3% is Black or African American, 1% is Asian, and 1% belong to other racial groups.

History of Dalton

Dalton was founded in 1847 as a railroad town and was incorporated as a city in 1854. The city was named after Robert Dalton, a lawyer who helped establish the railroad line through the area. Dalton quickly became an important railway junction in the years leading up to the Civil War.

During the Civil War, Dalton and the surrounding area saw combat during the Atlanta Campaign in 1864. The famous Great Locomotive Chase also passed through Dalton in 1862.

After the war, Dalton rebuilt and became a center of textile manufacturing in the south. The economy boomed through World War II with the production of textiles and floor coverings. While manufacturing remains important, Dalton has diversified its economy in recent decades.

Dalton Depot
