Columbus is a city located in Muscogee County in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population of Columbus was 195,769 making it the third largest city in Georgia after Atlanta and Augusta.

History

Columbus was established in 1828 and was named after Christopher Columbus. It served as a trading town along the Chattahoochee River and grew rapidly following the arrival of the railroad in the 1840s. During the Civil War, Columbus was a manufacturing center for the Confederate Army producing textiles, ships, ironworks and other goods. After the war, Columbus emerged as an important industrial center in the South. Its economy was based on textile mills and ironworks fed by the Chattahoochee River.

Geography and Climate

Columbus is located in west central Georgia along the Alabama border. It lies 100 miles southwest of Atlanta on the fall line of the Chattahoochee River. Columbus has a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, but sometimes cold winters. According to the Köppen climate classification, Columbus has hot summers, mild winters and precipitation evenly spread throughout the year.

As of the 2020 census, there were 195,769 people and 76,341 households residing in Columbus. The racial makeup of the city was 47.1% White, 43.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 6.7% of the population.

The median household income in Columbus was $47,889 and the per capita income was $25,336. About 18.7% percent of the population was below the poverty line.
