History

Augusta was established in 1736 by British colonist James Oglethorpe, making it the second oldest city in Georgia behind Savannah. It was named after Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. During the Revolutionary War, Augusta was briefly captured by British forces before being retaken by American troops led by Colonel Elijah Clarke in 1781. It later served as Georgia's first state capital from 1785 until 1795.

Augusta emerged as a major commercial center due to its location on the Savannah River, which allowed trade and transportation via steamboats. By the mid 19th century, Augusta was connected by railroads and bridges spanning the river, further expanding its economy. It was a center of the Confederate gunpowder industry during the Civil War. In the aftermath, Augusta underwent many challenges but eventually rebounded as a major manufacturer of textiles and other goods.
