History of Athens

The area where Athens now sits was once home to the Creek and Cherokee peoples. The first Euro-American settler in the area was Hezekiah O'Neal, who built a cabin along the Oconee River in 1785. The city of Athens was formally incorporated in 1806, named after Athens, Greece, due to the hilly terrain and emphasis on learning and education. The town was centered around Athens College, chartered in 1785 and opened in 1801, which would eventually become the University of Georgia. Cotton mills were constructed along the river in the 1800s, bringing industry to the region. Athens supported the Confederacy during the Civil War but was spared from damage by Union forces. The city grew steadily through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its local music scene began developing in the 1970s and 1980s with the emergence of the B-52's and R.E.M, cementing Athens' reputation as a creative arts hub.
