Alpharetta is a city located in north central Georgia in Fulton County. As of 2017, the estimated population of Alpharetta was over 63,000 residents, making it one of the largest and fastest growing cities in the state.

History

The Alpharetta area was originally inhabited by the Muscogee Native Americans. In the early 1800s, European settlers began moving into the area. In 1831, the town of Milton County was formed and included the Alpharetta area. In 1857, Alpharetta was designated the county seat of Milton County. The city was incorporated in 1858.

During the Civil War, the town served as a supply and recreational destination. After the war, Alpharetta slowly began to grow with the establishment of schools, churches, stores, and other infrastructure. In 1931, Milton County was absorbed into Fulton County during the Great Depression. Over the later half of the 20th century, Alpharetta transformed from a rural farming town into a suburban residential and technology center.
