History

Waterbury was originally inhabited by the Mattatuck Indians. The first Europeans settled in the area in 1674. Waterbury was incorporated as a town in 1686 and as a city in 1853. Early settlers manufactured brass items, leading Waterbury to adopt the nickname "Brass City". Waterbury's brass industry thrived well into the 1900's. Today, manufacturing continues to play an important role in Waterbury's economy.

Waterbury reached its peak population of over 100,000 residents in the 1950s.
