Wallingford is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 45,135 at the 2010 census.[1]

History

Wallingford was established on October 10, 1667 when the Connecticut General Assembly authorized the “making of a village on the east river” to 38 planters and freemen. The 38 original settlers were given 316 acres (1.3 km2) of land. Wallingford was named after Wallingford, in England.[2]

Major landmarks from Wallingford's history include the Wallingford World War I Memorial, the Wallingford Train Station, and the Confederate Monument – a memorial to southerners who died in Wallingford while prisoners of war during the American Civil War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.9 square miles (103.3 km2), of which 38.3 square miles (99.2 km2) is land and 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2), or 3.98%, is water.

Wallingford is bordered by Cheshire to the northwest, Durham and Middletown to the north, Meriden to the northeast, North Haven to the east, Hamden and New Haven to the south, and North Branford to the west.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 45,135 people, 18,016 households, and 11,717 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,178.6 inhabitants per square mile (455.3/km2). There were 18,757 housing units at an average density of 490.0 per square mile (189.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 93.8% White, 1.8% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 4.2% of the population.

Of the 18,016 households, 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 34.1% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the town, the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $68,590 and the median income for a family was $82,888. About 3.6% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.

Economy

Wallingford has a diversified economic base including healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and service industries. Major employers include Gaylord Hospital, MidState Medical Center, Duracell, and Ulbrich Stainless Steels.[3]

Gaylord Hospital, with over 1,300 employees, is one of Wallingford's largest employers. It is a long-term acute care hospital and rehabilitation center.[4]

MidState Medical Center, with over 1,500 employees, is an acute care community hospital and health system.[5]

Duracell, a manufacturer of batteries, has operated a large manufacturing plant in Wallingford since the 1950s. The plant employs over 500 people.[6]

Ulbrich Stainless Steels & Special Metals, Inc. is a manufacturer of specialty metals products with around 300 employees in Wallingford.[7]

Government

Wallingford has a mayor-council form of government. The town council consists of nine members elected by district. The mayor is elected separately.[8]

The current mayor of Wallingford is William W. Dickinson, Jr. He has held the office since 1994 and is currently serving his 14th term.[9]

Education

Public schools in Wallingford are operated by Wallingford Public Schools. The district operates eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools.[10]

Wallingford is also home to several private schools including The Ward Homestead, Cheshire Academy, and Choate Rosemary Hall, a prestigious boarding school located just over the town line in neighboring Durham.

Transportation

Wallingford is served by Connecticut Transit New Haven Division buses. Route M provides local service within Wallingford and connections to Meriden and New Haven.[11]

The Wallingford Train Station provides rail service on the Hartford Line and Shore Line East. The station has direct connections to New Haven, Hartford, Springfield, New London, and Stamford by rail.[12]
