Torrington is a city in Litchfield County, Connecticut with a population of around 36,000 residents as of 2020. Once a busy manufacturing center, today Torrington is a lively community with historic architecture, cultural attractions, outdoor recreation, and more.

History of Torrington

The area that is now Torrington was first settled in 1735 and known as Litchfield County's "New Plantation." The town of Torringford was incorporated in October 1740 from parts of Litchfield. In 1812, the village of Wolcottville was created from parts of Torringford, named after the Wolcott family. Torringford and Wolcottville merged in 1866 to form the city of Torrington.

Torrington's early economy was fueled by the brass industry. Many mills and factories were constructed throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The brownstone quarries in Torrington also produced the stone used to build some iconic buildings in New York City and beyond.
