History

Stratford was founded in 1639 by Puritan leader Reverend Adam Blakeman as the first town in Connecticut settled beyond the Housatonic River. Settlers from England arrived in Stratford in 1639 seeking religious freedom. Land was purchased from the native Paugussett people who historically inhabited the area. Some of the original settlers were from families who founded Stratford-upon-Avon in England. The town took its name from that town.

Economy

Historically, Stratford was an agricultural community, but has more recently become largely commercial and residential due to its proximity to Bridgeport. Major employers in Stratford include Sikorsky Aircraft, Connecticut's largest employer with more than 8,000 local jobs, and Pepperidge Farm. The town has a diverse commercial base, with over 7,000 businesses operating in town. Stratford is home to the Connecticut corporate headquarters for several multi-nation companies. Brewster buildings, original parts of an aircraft complex erected in the 1940s, stand to this day and house Sikorsky helicopter research and development facilities.
