History

Stamford was founded in 1641 by Puritan colonists from Wethersfield. It was named after Stamford, Lincolnshire in England. For much of its early history, Stamford was an agricultural community. However, rapid growth began in the late 19th century spurred by industrialization and the arrival of railroads. Major employers like Yale & Towne, Scoville Manufacturing Company, and International Silver Company helped establish Stamford as an important manufacturing center. After 1950, Stamford began transitioning to a major corporate center, attracting companies like GTE, Champion International Corporation, Pitney Bowes, and NBC Sports. Today, Stamford is home to four Fortune 500 companies and serves as world headquarters for nine corporations.
