History of Meriden

Meriden was first settled in 1661 and was originally a part of the town of Wallingford. It was incorporated as a separate town in 1806 and became a city in 1867. One of the famous early industries in Meriden was silver production. Many factories producing silver goods were located there in the 1800s. Meriden earned the nickname "Silver City" due to the extensive production of silverware and other silver products.
