Hamden is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut with a population of over 60,000 residents. Originally settled in the 1600s, Hamden has grown from a quiet New England town to a thriving suburb of New Haven. The town boasts a rich history, strong local economy, and many attractions and landmarks for residents and visitors to enjoy.

History of Hamden

Hamden was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Quinnipiack tribe. In 1638, Reverend John Davenport and Puritan leader Theophilus Eaton led a group of followers from Boston to New Haven and purchased land from local tribes to establish a new Puritan colony. This purchase included present-day Hamden. In 1640, the colony of New Haven incorporated the town of Hamden as part of their settlement.[1]

For most of the 17th and 18th centuries, Hamden was a small agricultural community with a few mills along the Mill River. After the American Revolution, Hamden began to grow with the establishment of lumberyards, wagon shops, brick making, and gristmills. In the mid-1800s, Hamden was chosen as a stop on the New Haven and New London Railroad line, bringing more development to the town.

In 1866, Hamden was incorporated as its own town, separating from New Haven.[1] The town continued to expand with brickyards, a porcelain factory, and the establishment of a street railway connecting Hamden to New Haven. In the 20th century, Hamden saw population booms as new residents were drawn to the suburb. Today, the town maintains its independent identity as both a New England suburb and historical community.
