History of Fairfield

The area that is now Fairfield was initially home to the Patwin, a branch of the Wintun people who lived in the area for over 5,000 years. In 1810 the Mexican government granted the land to Sergeant Juan Manuel Vaca and the area became known as Rancho Suisun.

In 1846, Robert H. Waterman, a former sea captain and businessman from Rhode Island, purchased Rancho Suisun. Along with his partner, Archibald A. Ritchie, Waterman established the Waterman Steamship Company and the California Steam Navigation Company. This spurred development in the area with the establishment of a railroad stop, post office, shipyard, and township called Fairfield in honor of Waterman's hometown in Connecticut.

Fairfield was incorporated as a city in 1903. In the following decades, it became home to Travis Air Force Base which brought significant population and economic growth. Today, Fairfield's economy encompasses retail, healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, and other industries as it continues to grow as part of the Bay Area region.
