Enfield is a town located in Hartford County in the U.S. state of Connecticut. According to the 2020 census, the population of Enfield is 44,654 people.

History

Enfield was originally inhabited by the Pocomtuc tribe of Native Americans. In 1672, settlers from Salem, Massachusetts purchased land from the Pocomtuc and established the town of Enfield. During the American Revolutionary War, the town's powder mill supplied the colonial forces. In 1749, Enfield was incorporated as a town. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Enfield was largely an agricultural community. In the early 20th century, railroads and industrialization brought new growth to the town. The city is home to many historic sites and buildings from its long history including the Enfield Town Hall and Enfield Historical Society Museum.

As mentioned above, the population of Enfield according to the 2020 census is 44,654 residents. This makes it the 31st largest municipality in Connecticut by population. The population density is 785.5 persons per square mile. From 2000 to 2010, Enfield's population grew 4.8%.

Economy

Historically an agricultural area, today Enfield has a diverse economy. The town's largest employers include LEGO, Home Depot, Target, CVS Pharmacy, and Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. Many residents also commute to the Hartford area for work.

Transportation

Enfield is served by several key transportation links. Interstate 91 runs through the western side of town, connecting Enfield to Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts. The town is also served by U.S. Route 5 which parallels the interstate. The Hartford Transit provides bus service to Enfield.

Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks is the closest major airport, located just 15 minutes from Enfield. Amtrak trains also stop at the Enfield station with service on the Vermonter line.

Schools

Public education in Enfield is managed by Enfield Public Schools. The district operates 9 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and Enfield High School. There are approximately 4,400 students enrolled in the district's schools.

Old Town Hall

The Enfield Old Town Hall is a historic town hall at 820 Enfield Street. It was built in 1844 and served as the town hall until the new town hall was constructed in 1999. The Greek Revival style building now houses the Enfield Historical Society Museum.

Hazardville United Methodist Church

The Hazardville United Methodist Church is a historic church at 330 Hazard Avenue in the Hazardville section of Enfield. It was built in 1870 in the Gothic Revival architectural style. The church has beautiful stained glass windows dating back to the 19th century.

Enfield Falls
