History of Danbury

Danbury was first settled in 1684 by eight families from Norwalk and Stamford, Connecticut. The original settlement was located in what is now downtown Danbury. It was initially called Swampfield due to its swampy landscape but the name was later changed to Danbury after the town of Danbury in Essex, England.

During the American Revolutionary War, Danbury was invaded and burned down by British forces in 1777. The city quickly rebuilt and continued to grow throughout the 19th century. Danbury became a manufacturing hub known for its hat production. By the late 1800s, it produced more hats than any other place in the United States thus earning the nickname "Hat City."

The hat making industry started to decline in the early 20th century. However, Danbury continued to develop into a diverse city through hosting new businesses like Cartier and Duracell which moved their headquarters here. Today Danbury is home to a mix of high-tech companies, healthcare facilities, and retail stores that employ thousands of local residents.
