Fairfield was founded in 1639 and was originally named Unquowa. It was incorporated as a town in 1821. Early settlers were attracted to the area due to its location along Long Island Sound and the Pequonnock River which allowed for trade and commerce. Throughout its history, the town's economy revolved around fishing, oystering and agriculture.

During the American Revolutionary War, British forces raided and occupied sections of Fairfield in an attempt to cut off supplies to American forces. Many homes and buildings were burned during the raids in what became known as the "Burning of Fairfield."

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Fairfield transitioned to become a commuter town for New York City and Bridgeport. Suburban neighborhoods were developed and the population grew steadily. Grand estates and beach houses were also constructed during this time period.
