History of Wauwatosa

The area that is now Wauwatosa was inhabited by Native American tribes including the Menominee, Potawatomi, and Chippewa prior to European settlement. The first European settlers arrived in 1835 and the area was originally part of Milwaukee County. Wauwatosa was incorporated as a separate village in 1892 and as a city in 1897.

Wauwatosa was named after the Potawatomi word for "firefly." Early economic activity included agriculture, quarrying limestone, and manufacturing farm machinery. The arrival of the railroad accelerated Wauwatosa's growth and residential development beginning in the late 1800s.

Today, Wauwatosa retains some of its historical charm including homes dating back to the 1800s but it has also evolved into a modern suburban community.
