Wausau is a city in and the county seat of Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 39,626 at the 2020 census, making it the largest community in Marathon County. Wausau is located on the Wisconsin River and serves as the core of the Wausau Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Marathon County and had a population of 134,063 at the 2010 census.

History

Wausau was founded in 1836 by European-American settler Norman Warren, who named the village for a Menominee Indian leader named "Wausau". Wausau Paper Corporation was formed in 1899 in the city. Between the early 1990s and early 2000s, the city had a hospital and a high school named after Andrew Warren, Norman's son. In 2008, after discussion, it was decided by the board to return to the original name of Wausau East High School and Wausau Hospital, dropping Andrew Warren's name. Population

As of the 2020 census, there were 39,626 people living in Wausau. The racial makeup of the city was 87.7% White, 1.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 6.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 3.4% of the population.

Economy

Wausau has long been an economic center for northern and central Wisconsin. The Wausau region supports a workforce of approximately 100,000 people and serves a market of 1.5 million people. The city's downtown includes commercial and government buildings such as the Marathon County Courthouse, built in 1906.
