Waukesha is a city in and the county seat of Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 72,489.

Population

According to the Wikipedia page for Waukesha, the city has grown substantially over the past century. In 1910, Waukesha had a population of 8,916 which grew to 28,595 by 1950. As of the 2020 census, the population was 72,489 making it the 7th largest city in Wisconsin.

History

Waukesha was first settled by European-Americans in 1834, with Morris D. Cutler as its first settler. When the first post office was established in 1837, the village was known as Prairie Village. It was renamed Waukesha in 1847.

Waukesha served as a center of abolitionist activity in southeastern Wisconsin during the early 1840s.The Waukesha Public Library has a collection of anti-slavery documents from that era.

The area that is known as the City of Waukesha today was once part of Milwaukee County. In 1846, residents voted to separate from Milwaukee County and became the new county seat of Waukesha County.

In the early 20th century, Waukesha became known for its radium-bearing spring water and grand resort hotels drawing people for health and recreational benefits. This earned it the nicknames "Saratoga of the West" and "World's Water Centre."
