History

The first residents of the Sheboygan area were Native Americans, specifically the Potawatomi tribe. European settlers didn't arrive until the 1830s when the first sawmills were constructed along the Sheboygan river. By the mid-1800s, an influx of German immigrants established the city's strong Germanic roots which remain today. Sheboygan was officially incorporated as a city in 1868.
