With a population of 66,083 as of the 2010 census, Oshkosh is the largest city in Winnebago County, Wisconsin. Located where the Fox River enters Lake Winnebago from the west, Oshkosh has been an important center of industry and transportation since the 19th century.

History

The Menominee people were the original inhabitants of the area. European settlement began in the 1830s as lumber harvesting increased along the Fox River. Oshkosh was incorporated as a city in 1853. It grew rapidly due to the lumber industry and its transport links via the river and Lake Winnebago. By 1874, Oshkosh was the third-largest city in Wisconsin with a population over 12,000.

The lumber mills declined in the late 19th century, but Oshkosh continued to industrialize. Many current manufacturers including Oshkosh Corporation and Valley Metal Craft got their start in Oshkosh during this period. The city is also known for hosting the Experimental Aircraft Association's AirVenture fly-in every summer.
