History

Milwaukee was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. French missionaries and traders later passed through the area in the late 17th and 18th centuries. In 1818, the first permanent settlement was established by Solomon Juneau. By the mid-1800s, Milwaukee had grown into a hub for shipping, rail, and industry due to its location on Lake Michigan and proximity to Chicago. Beer brewing emerged as a major industry, led by brewers such as Schlitz, Blatz, and Pabst. Milwaukee was incorporated as a city in 1846.
