Green Bay is a city located in Brown County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population of Green Bay was 105,139 people, making it the third largest city in Wisconsin after Milwaukee and Madison.

History

The Green Bay area was first inhabited by various Native American tribes including the Menominee, Winnebago, and the Potawatomi. The French were the first Europeans to explore the Green Bay area with explorers like Jean Nicolet visiting in the 1600s. The area was colonized by the French in the late 17th century.

The name "Green Bay" comes from the French "Baie Verte" meaning "green bay". This referred to the color of the water due to lush vegetation along the shorelines. The area was controlled by the French until 1761 when it was ceded to the British after the French and Indian War. The United States gained control of the area in 1783 after the American Revolutionary War.

Green Bay itself was settled by Americans in 1816 and chartered in 1854. It became an important shipping port for the lumber industry and for agriculture. Today, Green Bay is best known as the home of the Green Bay Packers professional football team.
