Fond du Lac is a city in Fond du Lac County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 42,913 making it the second largest city in the county and the 272nd largest city in the United States. Fond du Lac sits at the southern tip of Lake Winnebago and is part of the Fox Cities metropolitan area.

History

Fond du Lac was first settled by European Americans in 1835. The name "Fond du Lac" comes from the French meaning "bottom of the lake", referring to the city's location at the southern end of Lake Winnebago. Early residents made their living through trapping, trading, milling, and agriculture.

As of the 2020 census, Fond du Lac had a population of 42,913 residents. The racial makeup of the city was 89.7% White, 2.6% African American, 0.8% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 2.9% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. 5.5% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
