Wenatchee is a city located in north central Washington along the Columbia River. With a population of 34,660 as of 2021 according to Wikipedia, it is the largest city in Chelan County.

History

The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes including the Yakama, Palus, Wenatchi, Entiat, and Chelan. The current site of Wenatchee was known as "Wenatchi" to these tribes. White settlers began arriving in the mid to late 19th century. Wenatchee was officially incorporated as a city on January 1, 1893. Early settlers planted apple orchards in the surrounding valley, taking advantage of the warm, dry climate. Apples became the major agricultural crop and industry in Wenatchee, earning it the nickname "Apple Capital of the World."
