South Hill is a census-designated place located in Pierce County, Washington, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of South Hill was 61,791 making it the largest unincorporated community in Washington. South Hill is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area.

History

The earliest settlers to the South Hill area arrived in 1853. It was originally forested land that was steadily logged and cleared over time for homesteading. The South Hill Historical Society has documented much of the history of the area.

As of the 2020 census, South Hill had a population of 61,791 residents which is a 33% increase over the 2010 census. South Hill is the largest unincorporated CDP in the state of Washington. It has a population density of 4,092 people per square mile. The racial makeup of South Hill is 72% White, 11% Asian, 6% African American, 1% Native American, and 10% from other races. 12% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino. The median age is 35.2 years old.
