With a population of 54,742 as of 2019, Richland is a mid-sized city located in southeastern Washington. It is part of the Tri-Cities metropolitan area along with neighboring Pasco and Kennewick. Richland sits along the Columbia River and is known for its history, economy, education system, and abundance of attractions and recreation.

History

The Tri-Cities area has been inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years. The area was explored by Lewis and Clark in 1805. Settlement of Richland began in the 1860s when the town Penawawa was established near the confluence of the Yakima and Columbia Rivers. After the county was partitioned, the town name was changed to Richland in 1904.

In 1943, the U.S. government selected Richland as the site for plutonium production plants to support the Manhattan Project during World War II. This ushered in major population and economic growth in Richland. The federal government built housing for thousands of workers who moved to Richland to work at the new plutonium plants. After the war, there were questions about whether the government plants would continue operating. Richland residents lobbied to keep the plants open, citing their contribution to jobs and the economy. In 1958, the plants were transferred to civilian control and continue operating today as major employers in the region.
