History of Renton

The first known settlers in what is now Renton were Henry Tobin and his wife Diana. They claimed a nice piece of land on the bank of Cedar River in what is now Renton in the 1860s. In 1871, Erasmus M. Smithers and William Wallace McNaughton filed a plat for the town of Renton, named in honor of Captain William Renton, the manager of the Renton Coal Company.

Renton's early economy relied heavily on coal mining and timber extraction. Clay was another important resource, and brick manufacturing became a major employer in the city for decades. At one time Renton had miles of logging trams bringing resources to sawmills on Lake Washington. Railroads were built connecting Renton to the ports and cities for easier transportation of goods.

The town of Renton was officially incorporated on September 6, 1901 with a population of approximately 700 people. Throughout the 20th century, Renton's economy continued to rely heavily on natural resources and manufacturing. Weyerhaeuser opened a pulp mill on the shores of Lake Washington in 1927. Boeing opened its Renton Factory in 1936.

Today, Renton has become an important suburban city in the Seattle metropolitan area. While manufacturing remains an important part of the local economy, Renton has diversified into a hub for technology, healthcare, and professional services as well.
