Pasco is a city located in Franklin County, Washington. As of the 2010 census, the population of Pasco was 59,781, making it the fourth largest city in the state of Washington. Pasco is located along the Columbia River and is part of the Tri-Cities metropolitan area which also includes the nearby cities of Kennewick and Richland.

History

The history of Pasco dates back to the 1880s when the Northern Pacific Railroad established a division point in the area. The city was officially incorporated on September 3, 1891. The name "Pasco" was chosen in honor of Ceran St. Vrain, a fur trader who owned a trading post near the mouth of the Platte River in the 1830s. Vrain's nickname was "Pasco" which came from a French word meaning "Easter."

In the early 20th century, Pasco became an important agricultural hub with access to irrigation, rail transport, and barging on the Columbia River. Major crops included potatoes, apples, grapes and other fruits. Over the years, food processing, chemical manufacturing, and nuclear power also became important industries in Pasco.
