The land that is now Lynnwood was originally inhabited by local Native American tribes thousands of years ago. Lynnwood is located at 47.82° N, 122.31° W. The city has a total area of 11.31 square miles. Located close to Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains, Lynnwood has a mild oceanic climate with cool, wet winters and mild, relatively dry summers. The average temperature ranges from the mid-30s in the winter to the mid-70s in the summer.

The racial makeup of the city was 65.8% White, 11.5% Asian, 6.5% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.4% Pacific Islander, and 5.1% from two or more races.
