Longview was founded in 1921 by businessman Robert A. Long, who planned the city as an industrial hub for the growing logging and timber industry in the area. The city was officially incorporated on February 14, 1924. During World War II, Longview was the home of an aluminum smelter that produced aircraft materials for the war effort. The racial makeup of Longview was 30,457 (83.2%) White, 554 (1.5%) African American, 399 (1.1%) Native American, 1,092 (3.0%) Asian, 104 (0.3%) Pacific Islander, 1,613 (4.4%) from other races, and 2,429 (6.6%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 4,503 persons (12.3%).
