History

The early history of Kent can be traced back to the 1860s when Ezra Meeker and his wife Eliza Jane Meeker arrived from Illinois and set up a farm near the Green River. At the time, other settler families were also staking claims in the area. In 1864, Ezra Meeker bought property along the river that would come to be known as Meeker Street. He worked to establish the town of Kent, naming it after Kent County, England where his ancestors had lived. The town grew slowly but steadily, surviving floods and other obstacles.
