Everett is a city located in Snohomish County in the U.S. state of Washington, about 25 miles north of Seattle. As of the 2020 census, Everett has a population of 116,854, making it the 7th largest city in Washington. Everett is the county seat of Snohomish County and is the largest city in the county.

History

Everett was founded in 1890 by land developers Charles L. Colby, John L. Olmstead and Dennis Brigham. They purchased the land from John Harford and named the town Everett after Edward Everett, who Colby had heard speak when he was in college. Harford had originally named the town Port Gardner when he filed the plat in 1881.

In its early days, Everett's economy was driven by the lumber industry. The city's port and railroad connections made it a transport hub and a gateway for international trade. In the early 20th century, Everett became home to major employers like the Kimberly-Clark paper mill and the Pacific Coast Steel mill, securing its reputation as a working-class industrial city. During World War II, Everett's economy expanded significantly with the wartime workforce and production, including the construction of ships at the Everett Shipyard.

Over the years, Everett has grown beyond its industrial roots to become a more diversified economy and destination in its own right. It is home to Boeing's assembly plant for the 747, 767, 777 and 787 airliner families. Tourism, retail and technology companies now all play a role in Everett's modern economy.
