Bremerton is a city in Kitsap County, Washington with a population of around 40,500 as of 2019 according to the Wikipedia page. It is the largest city on the Kitsap Peninsula and is home to the Bremerton Naval Shipyard which is the largest navy yard on the West Coast.

History

Bremerton was founded by German immigrant William Bremer in 1891. Bremer saw the value of the excellent port located on Sinclair Inlet which was protected by the neck of the peninsula. He purchased 190 acres and had it platted for a town in anticipation of the area becoming a major seaport. The town was incorporated on October 15, 1901 with the name "Bremerton" in honor of its founder.

The establishment of the Puget Sound Navy Yard in 1891 led to major growth for Bremerton. During World War II, the population increased dramatically with workers coming to aid in shipbuilding for the war effort. Housing shortages led to the creation of temporary housing and planned communities. After the war, there was a decline in population but the navy yard remained active through the Cold War years.

Population

As of the 2020 census, Bremerton had a population of 42,797. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The racial makeup of the city is 75.5% White, 6.7% African American, 1.5% Native American, 7.4% Asian, 1.3% Pacific Islander, 2.4% from other races, and 5.2% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race make up 8.5% of the population.

Economy

The economy of Bremerton is heavily influenced by the naval shipyard which is the area's largest employer. Some other major employers include Harrison Medical Center, Peninsula Community Health Services, and the Bremerton School District. The USS Turner Joy is a retired US Navy destroyer that is now a museum ship located on the Bremerton waterfront. The ship served in the Vietnam War and now serves as a memorial. There are self-guided tours available.
