History

The city of Bellingham was officially incorporated on December 4, 1903. However, the area had been inhabited for thousands of years by Native American tribes including the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe. In 1854, Captain George E. Pickett established the first white settlement in the area called Whatcom. The name Bellingham comes from Captain William Bellingham, on whose ship the settlers reached the area. The city experienced rapid growth starting in the 1890s with the arrival of railroads connecting it to other parts of the Pacific Northwest. Major industries early in Bellingham's history included coal and lumber. Today, Bellingham has transitioned to an economy focused on healthcare, education, technology, and tourism.
