History of Bellevue

The first settlers of European descent arrived in what is now Bellevue in the 1860s. One of the first homesteads was built in 1867 by William Meydenbauer who named the area "Bellevue" which means "beautiful view" in French. The early settlers were mostly farmers attracted by the abundant natural resources and fertile land.

Bellevue was officially incorporated as a city in 1953. In the following decades it experienced rapid suburban growth as the greater Seattle metropolitan area expanded. The completion of major highways and roads connecting Bellevue to Seattle fueled population and economic growth. By 1980, Bellevue had surpassed 50,000 residents and large corporate office parks were being constructed to attract businesses.

Microsoft opened offices in Bellevue in 1986 which further established the city's reputation as a hub for the high-tech industry. Continued growth into the 1990s and 2000s has led Bellevue to become the fifth largest city in Washington today while retaining much of its suburban character.
