History of Tuckahoe

Tuckahoe has a long history dating back to Native American tribes that inhabited the area along the James River hundreds of years ago. Some of the tribes included the Powhatan, Monacan, and Saponi tribes. In 1607, English settlers established the Jamestown Settlement nearby, and began exploring upriver along the James. By the 18th century, large tobacco plantations dominated the landscape around Tuckahoe and other areas along the James River.

The community of Tuckahoe itself was established in the early 1700s. It was named after the tuckahoe plant which grew in abundance along the river. Tuckahoe became home to many large estates and plantations throughout the 1700s and 1800s. Some of the historic homes and plantations still standing today include Tuckahoe Plantation, Agecroft Hall, and Sara Hill.

During the 19th century, Tuckahoe continued to grow as an agricultural community producing tobacco, wheat, corn and produce. The rich farmland along the James River provided ideal conditions to grow crops. The community was also located along the James River and Kanawha Canal, providing transportation access to markets. Several mills were built along the canal and river.

Today, Tuckahoe remains a small, unincorporated community surrounded by commercial and residential development. Many new housing subdivisions and businesses have been built in recent decades as the Richmond metro area expanded westward. However, the community still retains much of its historic charm and buildings from its roots as a colonial river town and trading port.
