History

Reston was founded in 1964 by Robert E. Simon Jr. Simon had purchased 6,750 acres of land in Fairfax County with the vision of building a planned community for all. The name "Reston" was a portmanteau of his initials (Robert E. Simon) and the word "town." Simon laid out seven guiding principles that still shape Reston today - among them diversity, connectivity, sustainability, beauty, and equity (read more on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reston,_Virginia).

From its inception, Reston distinguished itself by its guiding principles. The community was open to all races, incomes, and ages. Pathways for bikes and pedestrians connected neighborhoods to one another and to community facilities. Neighborhoods and shopping centers incorporated public artworks and attractive landscaping. Environmental protection and stewardship were emphasized. And the community was designed for its residents to live, work, play, and learn in their hometown.
