Portsmouth is an independent city located in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 95,535, making it the third-most populous city in Virginia. Portsmouth is located on the Elizabeth River and is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.

History

Portsmouth was founded by Colonel William Crawford in 1752. It was established as a town in 1752 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly and incorporated as a city in 1858. Portsmouth grew quickly as a port town and was once one of the busiest international ports on the East Coast. Shipbuilding was a major industry in Portsmouth during the 18th and 19th centuries. Geography

Portsmouth is located at 36°50′N 76°17′W (36.8365444, -76.2881562). It has a total area of 47 square miles, of which 33 square miles is land and 14 square miles is water. Portsmouth is located on the western side of the Elizabeth River directly across from the City of Norfolk. It is south of Hampton Roads and sits on a peninsula of land bordered by the Elizabeth River, the James River, and the Chesapeake Bay.

Portsmouth is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. Neighboring cities include Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Suffolk. Portsmouth is the second-oldest city in Hampton Roads after Norfolk.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, the racial makeup of Portsmouth was 41.3% white, 53.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.1% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.5% of the population.

There were 40,105 households, out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.5% were married couples living together, 21.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.8% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.6 males.

Economy

Historically, Portsmouth's economy relied heavily on shipbuilding and shipping. Norfolk Naval Shipyard, located in Portsmouth, is a major U.S. Navy facility for ship repair and overhaul. The city is also home to several terminals handling international cargo. Other major employers in Portsmouth include Huntington Ingalls Industries, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, Social Security Administration Data Operations Center, TFC Recycling, Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News, The Printpack Company and BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards.

Today, Portsmouth's economy includes retail trade, education, and health care. Major shopping destinations include Virginia Beach Boulevard, Effingham Street, Olde Towne, London Boulevard, and Victory Crossing.

The city is located adjacent to the Monitor–Merrimac Memorial Bridge–Tunnel, which provides vehicle access to neighboring city Norfolk via Interstate 664. Norfolk International Airport is located nearby in Norfolk.

Amtrak serves Portsmouth's Portsmouth Station station via Northeast Regional trains running between Boston and Norfolk, Virginia.
