History of Oakton

Oakton has a rich history dating back to colonial times. The area was first settled in the early 1700s by English colonists. By the late 1700s, several prominent Virginians had established plantations and estates in Oakton, including George Mason and George Washington.

During the Civil War, Oakton and nearby Centreville were the sites of military camps and skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces. The Second Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) took place just a few miles west of Oakton in August 1862.

In the early 20th century, Oakton began transitioning from a rural farming community to a suburban residential area as Washington, D.C. expanded. Significant suburban growth occurred in Oakton following World War II. The community was formally incorporated as a census-designated place in 1960.
