With a population of around 180,000, Newport News, Virginia is one of the major cities that make up the Hampton Roads metropolitan area in southeastern Virginia. Located on the Virginia Peninsula, Newport News has a long and storied history that is deeply intertwined with the emergence of the United States as a naval power.

History

The area that is now Newport News was once part of Warwick County, one of the eight original shires created in colonial Virginia in 1634. The town of Newport News was founded in 1896 by railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington as the eastern terminus for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The new railroad facilitated the transportation of West Virginia coal east to the harbor. Shipping facilities and shipbuilding companies soon developed along the harbor, creating an industrial boom.

The Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company opened in 1886 and became a leading builder of naval warships. During World War I and World War II its bustling shipyards earned Newport News the nickname "The Shipbuilding Capital of the World." Many landmark vessels including the famous U.S.S. Enterprise aircraft carrier were built at the Newport News shipyards.

Today, Newport News Shipbuilding remains a major division of Huntington Ingalls Industries and the largest industrial employer in Virginia. The shipyard continues to design and build U.S. Navy warships including aircraft carriers and submarines.

Newport News incorporated as an independent city in 1896 and Warwick County was consolidated with the city in 1958. The city played a pivotal role in American aviation as the location of NASA's Langley Research Center where groundbreaking aeronautical research was conducted in the early 20th century.

Today Newport News is known for its maritime heritage, aviation history, museums and cultural attractions, parks and recreational opportunities, and dynamic economy.
