Hampton is an independent city in Virginia located on the southeastern tip of the Virginia Peninsula along the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. As of the 2020 census, the population of Hampton was 135,410 making it one of the larger independent cities in Virginia.

History of Hampton

Hampton has a long history dating back to the early 17th century. It was founded in 1610 by colonists and was one of the first English settlements in North America. The city was named for Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, an important leader of the Virginia Company of London who helped establish the Jamestown Settlement. During the Civil War, the famous Battle of Hampton Roads took place here between the Monitor and Merrimack ironclad warships, marking the first battle between ironclads.

According to the 2020 census, Hampton had a population of 135,410 making it the 5th largest independent city in Virginia. The racial makeup of the city was 49.0% African American, 39.7% White, 5.7% Asian, 0.4% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.8% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.8% of the population.
