Dale City is a census-designated place located in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of Dale City was 70,709 making it the largest community in Prince William County. Dale City is part of the Washington metropolitan area.

History

Dale City originated in 1969 as a planned community subdivision of about 2,700 acres in size. It was established by Clarence "Tiger" Teague and the Allen-Fairfax Land Company. The community was named after Teague's son, Dale Teague. Prior to development, the area was made up of mostly farmland.

Construction began in March 1969 and new home sales began in October of that year. By 1970, Dale City had about 6,000 residents. Population growth was swift in the early years as Dale City provided suburban housing for the growing workforce of nearby Washington D.C.

Over the years, Dale City evolved into one of the largest residential communities in Virginia. While primarily a residential area, businesses, retail centers, and industrial parks have developed to support the local population.
