History

The history of Annandale dates back to the 17th century when it was part of the Ravensworth Land Grant, given by King Charles II of England. In 1760, Thomson Francis Mason purchased 1,208 acres of land which included most of present-day Annandale. He named the property Annandale after his family's estate in Scotland.

Throughout the 19th century, Annandale remained a rural farming community. After World War II, the construction of the Capital Beltway led to massive suburban growth in Annandale and the surrounding areas. Housing developments replaced many of the farms and large estates that once dominated the landscape.

Today, Annandale is known for its ethnic diversity, with large populations of Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Salvadoran, and Indian immigrants. While it retains some of its suburban character, Annandale has evolved into a bustling urban community and an important part of Northern Virginia.
