History

West Valley City was incorporated on July 1, 1980 but the area had been settled much earlier. The first known residents were Native American tribes like the Shoshone and Ute people. Mormon pioneers first arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 and began establishing settlements in the area.

In the 1940s, defense industries developed during World War II brought an influx of new residents to the valley on the west side of Salt Lake City. Housing developments were constructed to accommodate defense workers and their families. After the war, population growth continued and the area became known as Granger. In 1980, Granger and neighboring communities incorporated into West Valley City.
