South Jordan is a city in Salt Lake County in the U.S. state of Utah. As of 2019, the estimated population of South Jordan was 76,598 making it the 15th largest city in Utah. The city lies in the Salt Lake Valley along the banks of the Jordan River between the Oquirrh Mountains and the Wasatch Mountains. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.

History

South Jordan was established in 1859 by settlers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first settler family was the Kearns family, after whom the Kearns-Saint Ann Catholic Church was named. The city officially incorporated in 1978 and has experienced rapid growth since the 1990s. Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 76,598 people and 19,359 households in South Jordan. The racial makeup of the city was 87.4% White, 1.8% African American, 0.8% Native American, 3.6% Asian, 0.9% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races.

25.4% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. The median income for a household was $109,769. About 5.5% of families and 6.5% of the population were below the poverty line.

South Jordan has a nonpartisan mayor-council form of government, meaning the mayor and city council are elected separately. The mayor serves a 4-year term and has no term limits.
